I am so excited to be finally sharing our new window seat in our sons nursery. Many steps and love went into this project. The window seat really has turned out to be the focal point of our son James nursery.. It sets the tone for whole his room. My mom was a huge part of his nursery reveal, both her and I made most of the pillows ourselves with tons of love.. Thanks MOM!! I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. This is how the bedroom started out.. With the perfect indentation under window and the best part was with no vents.. yay!! I knew I wanted to build a window seat here as soon as we bought this house. Finding out we were having a boy just changed the vision / design look a bit into a more masculine version. ;)
This is us shopping for materials.. You can see this reveal has been a slow work in progress as our daughter was in her winter coat on when we first bought our supplies :) We have been crazy busy doing other DIY's before our little guy got here.. 'Nesting' started very early over here!!
First my hubby built the sturdy base and removed the baseboard for a perfect fit under the window..
The major steps in creating our window seat:
1. empty space
2. base out of 2x4's
3. Adding thick white MDF seat top
4. Framing base with cedar planks, adding baskets and foam cushion
We knew we wanted to use these storage baskets so we built a cedar wood frame around them. We simply had Rona cut the cedar planks to the perfect width for the top and bottom pieces. To make the window seat look trimmed and finished we then used our trusty brad nailer to nail the cedar planks over top of the 2x4's to cover the base.
I just love the way the trimmed cedar planks frame and flow perfectly with the baskets.
Originally we were going to paint out the cedar planks with white paint but with some family input, we have decided to keep it natural and it has totally grown on me. We have keeping the natural cedar colour as it also ties in with the bookcases my talented hubby built. More on them to come...
My super talented Mom also made me this fabulous window seat cushion cover, She made it out of shoe canvas as the overall material, durable and affordable.. with a white cotton ready-made piping trim.
And here you have it.. our completed window seat.. decorated with pillows and our new cushion cover..
The rope detailed pillow and navy Leo the lion astrology pillow were both purchased at Target. The whale shaped pillow is one I found online at Joss and Main.. The rest either myself or my mom hand made.. some of which I will be sharing tutorials on soon..
I tried to use all natural materials whenever possible in his room. The white piped trim mixed with the canvas on the window seat cushion really flows with the nautical nursery theme.. and really opens up the pillow colour possibilities..
I found these great baskets at Target before they closed in Canada. I loved them the minute I saw them. SO my hubby built the window seat around them, customizing the cubbies/ base to fit 4 baskets perfectly..
Now we have handy built in storage thanks to the slide out baskets and a comfy place to hang out with the kids and build memories..

That looks fantastic and you must be so happy to have it finished for your new little guy. Love the pillow choices but agree that the cedar is a great look.
