DIY Board and Batten Wall behind Bar

To commence the day our Rustic Bar was featured on Remodelaholic I thought it was the perfect time to share what we have been up to in our Basement. We added a simple Board and Batten wall, it was an absolute must in completing the light coastal look I have been craving!! Board and Batten can add such a nice unexpected detail to a plain wall, and you can't beat a makeover that can easily be achieved for under $50! See below for a step by step tutorial on how we achieved the look. And head over to Remodelaholic HERE to see our FULL FEATURE  on our Rustic Bar with Galvanized top.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
8FT MDF sheet x2 (cut into 2 inch strip pieces)
Brad nailer
Mitre saw
sanding sponge
DAP to fill in holes

First it started with a 8FT piece of MDF from our local hardware store that we had them cut into 2 inch strips.
We then trimmed the whole wall in a frame of the 2 inch MDF strips and secured them to the wall using our handy Brad nailer.
Please ignore the mess,  It was a mini construction zone.. I just wanted you all to see the full framing effect taking place on our wall.
We then got to the fun part.. Adding the inside strips. We placed the strips of MDF vertically and spaced them using our trusty sanding sponge.. It worked out great for easy spacing!! : )
This is how it looked with all the strips.. Not painted of course. I apologize these pics were taken at night with my phone. Then came the not so fun part but necessary.. Filling all the holes from the brad nailer! We used a card and swiped a thin amount of dap over the holes. once dried, approx 1 hr later, we sanded the strips. And lastly followed up with 2 coats of Benjamin Moore Paint in Cloud White
And here it is all done!! I love the simple detail, it creates a great backdrop for our bar to really stand out and be the centre of attention. For more info on how we made our custom, Rustic bar head over to Remodelaholic HERE to check out the full details.

  2. Hello! I love that bar you made, GOOD JOB! I think I need one of those for my garden/.garage entertaining. So I just started following you thanks to your feature on Remodelaholic. I see the Big Rock sign you picked up at the antique store, are you from Alberta? If so, please share with me the details on where you got that bar top done so I can go too.
    Cheers!

    1. Thanks Jolene, so glad you found me :) . I'm from Ontario.. For the bar counter top I just looked online for a local Sheet metal manufacturer and called around. And the second company was willing to customize a galvanized counter top to the size we needed.

  3. Looks amazing!.. I was wondering how to redecorate small niche in our living room and this totally inspired me, plus that detail "under $50" sounds even better. Plan for the weekend - made.
